Deep Well Spooling

In 2019 USS decided to take advantage of the fact that the ESP market in the Permian basin did not have any spooling units that could safely handle deep wells with one rig. Traditionally deep wells required two spooling units due to the length and weight of the cable. This substantially increased spooling cost since two spooling units and two operators were required.
The experts at USS started with a 2013 Peterbilt rig powered by a 500 HP Cummins diesel engine. We used our many years of experience building, operating, and maintaining spooling equipment to design and fabricate a spooling mechanism that mounts directly on the Peterbilt. The unit is capable of self loading/ unloading reels up to 28,000 pounds. We also fabricated reels capable of handling up to 13,000 feet of 2 AWG leaded ESP cable. Another benefit is no field splices are required because the ESP shop can load the entire cable onto one reel rather than transporting the cable to location on two separate reels. The Peterbilt is also equipped with a sleeper cab which helps manage fatigue especially on 24-hour rigs.
